Petri Dish

A Petri dish is a shallow, cylindrical glass or plastic lidded dish that is a staple in biological laboratories. It is primarily used as a receptacle for culture media where microorganisms, cells, and small plants can be grown for scientific research, clinical diagnosis, and educational purposes. The design of the Petri dish, typically with a diameter ranging from 35mm to 150mm, allows for an even spread of culture medium and provides ample space for the growth of the culture under controlled environmental conditions.

The transparent nature of the Petri dish is particularly beneficial as it permits the observation of the culture without disturbance. Petri dishes can be disposable or reusable, with glass dishes often used when higher temperatures are required for sterilization. Their versatility also extends to applications in chemistry and physics, where they can be used for evaporative processes, storage of samples, or as vessels for observational experiments. This simple yet effective tool is crucial in numerous scientific fields, facilitating experiments that contribute to important advances in knowledge and technology.
